Embrace your emotions!!!!!

The biggest aha moment is to embrace your emotions, "I am upset" or  "I am feeling low" or "wow, this was fun". This awareness of our emotions helps us to realize the causes of our behaviours.

Our education and societal norms teach to hide emotions, that is just wrong. We are human beings with ability to feel and control our feelings and that is the great power that makes us superior to animals.

Do not keep that “CONTROL” button down for too long, Let some “STEAM OFF” once in a while and see the miracle.

Here are some tips on how you can embrace your emotions:

1. Stop Judging

Quit being so hard on yourself.  Self-judgment suppresses your true emotions, and that could lead to so many negative consequences on you and those around you. So, “Just Be You” and celebrate “Who You Are”.

2. Allow Yourself to Feel all emotions

All human emotions have value. Even the ones we consider “bad” can benefit us if we allow ourselves to feel them genuinely. Allowing ourselves to feel all these emotions can benefit us to move through things in our lives that serve us and our relationships.

3. Be as you are.

Be aware about what you want and be honest with yourself, be kind to yourself, and get in touch with your true emotions. Remember that you are enough.

4. Let Go attitude

It is not uncommon to attach ourselves to our story.  But remember getting stuck to those stories puts you in the past, not the present. By simply feeling our emotions and moving through them, we can overcome almost anything.

5. Get Support

Emotional training to feel and express our emotions is a healthy and productive way. Get support when ever its required, we can move through the ups and downs of life much more effectively with the support. Remember that you don’t have to do it alone. It is not only okay, but necessary, for us to ask for and receive help.

DO NOT KILL YOUR JOB APPLICATION!!!!!

I have seen students stating the following purpose in their resume/CV:

 1. It will boost my career prospects, or

2. It will offer me a lot of opportunities to learn high-end skills,   or

3. The experience will help me improve my CV for greater opportunities, or

4. I didn’t learn enough so far, and now I want a place where I can learn great things.(The worst)

These applications speak how an opportunity to work will improve your prospects without stating what you have to offer to the employer, what skills you have that add value to the employer, why you should be hired. 

·      Stating your interest / agenda is ok as far as you convince your potential employer why they should hire you. 

·      You will not be hired because you want a job or you wish to improve your CV. (Remember these could be the by-products, once you are hired.)   

·      You will be hired if you have the potential and skills to meet the requirements of the job.

If you wish not to kill your chances at the application stage itself, make sure to think from the employers’ point of view and explain how you are the best fit for the job.

Appropriate attire for an interview at Start -ups and Corporates

 

You receive interview calls from start-ups and also larger corporations. In larger corporations, cubicles, fluorescent lights, and HR departments dictate the office atmosphere. Start-ups -especially tech start-ups- have become known for their anti-corporate attitudes.

Showing up for an interview, depending on whether it’s a start up or a corporate office would have a big impact on how everyone in the interview panel will perceive you.

Companies – no two are alike. They all have different cultures, people, and atmospheres. When you go into the interview, you have to complement their culture, not stand against it. That is why your interview attire is very important. You must remember that, you need to show you are a professional who is taking the opportunity seriously, but also that you will fit in with the company culture.

To know the culture of the company that you are appearing for interview, visit the company’s website and see if they have some pictures of their current employees posted on the website. If that is unavailable, see if you can tap into your network, or even reach out to a current employee of the company and discuss to learn about the company, what their culture is like and how people show up on a day-to-day basis. Definitely, this will give you a good prompt as to how you should show up for an interview.

Your subject knowledge confidence and amiability are essential. But making a good first impression by your appearance is very crucial in dictating the final outcome of the job interview. Most of the interviewers take just two seconds to judge whether you a potential candidate or not. Before you say a single word to the interviewer, you have already made an impression based on how you’re dressed.

Knowing what to wear to a job interview is an age-old enigma. Do not experiment in this. There are some hard and fast set of rules to be followed.

So here is a guide to make sure you choose an appropriate attire to excel that job interview you are applying for.

How to Dress for an Interview at a Start-up:

For an Interview at a start-up, if you showing up too casually, they may perceive that you are not taking the opportunity seriously. And if you overdress, they may think you are rigid with corporate attitude. 

·      For Women, It’s always safe to go the traditional, pairing a dress with a stylish but casual blazer. If the company where you are interviewing appears to be more “low key”, you can get away with pairing the blazer with jeans and heels. In fact, you can use the casual blazer as a constant and vary the rest of your outfit around the culture of the company. 

·      For Men, Hot pastel shirts, ripped jeans, an overdose of cologne and a pair of shades might impress your crush in the class. But when it comes to job interviews, the two piece or three piece might look too formal. Rather, you can wear a sport coat to show professionalism without being stuffy. Slacks and a button-down shirt will serve you well.

How to Dress for an Interview at a Corporate:

Recall the old adage, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That’s always the case when meeting a person for the first time, but especially when it comes to a job interview at corporates. 

·      Women can leave a lasting impression on the interviewer if they decide to go Indian as well. Wearing kurtis, suits or sarees to a job interview is also a trend that cannot be neglected. The elegance of Indian can get you the much-needed advantage. Wear a plain cotton saree or a salwar-kameez with a dupatta. Put on a blazer above it and you have made a great combination. Just make sure you avoid a lot of patterns and details. The simple, the better. Also wearing sleeveless is a strict “no”. 

·      Men can wear neatly pressed cotton or gabardine pants with cotton collard long sleeved button down white coloured shirts. Tie is optional. Remember your shoes speaks louder than words, wear well-polished, clean, decent shoes.

·      For both women and men, footwear should be fairly low heeled. High heels are difficult to walk-in. You never should grab attention while walking in uncomfortable noisy footwear.

Tips to prepare for recruitment process

Finding the right job and preparing for the recruitment process can be tricky. These tips may help you to set yourself up for success.

#1: Do your homework.

Do some research and learn about the company you are called for interview. You can visit their website and learn as much as you can. Being prepared will also minimize your anxiety.

#2: Dress appropriately.

Dress for the occasion. Current trend is business-casual attire, but it's still ok to wear a business-formal. Be sure to shake hands firmly and maintain eye contact.

#3 Be confident.

Make sure you can speak confidently about any experiences you've had in the workplace and in the classroom. Specific examples of how you've contributed to an organization or learned something exciting are of interest in the interviewer’s perspective. You have been called for the interview, as they have seen potential in you, so be sure to sell yourself by promoting your skills and abilities.

#4 Stay composed.

Being composed in the workplace is crucial. And an interview is a good measurement of how you handle pressure.

#5: Ask questions.

Jotting down the questions you would like to ask the interviewer about the company will lessen your anxiety. It demonstrates that you are interested in them and wants to know who they are, what they do etc.

#6: Get clarification.

If you don't understand a question posed by the interviewer, don't hesitate...ask them to repeat it. If you know exactly what they are asking, you have a better shot at giving your best answer

#7: Follow up.

It's a good practice to thank interviewers for their time. You may also request for a business card from the person or people that you meet with and sending a note to each one as soon as possible after the interview. This helps to build a professional network.

Resume Tip # 4

Write a resume in an attractive format!

• Choose reverse chronological format for the resume. That means, should have the most recent experiences first (academic or professional) and then the older entries. This type of format shows off your biggest achievements and strengths and also this format is most familiar amongst recruiters.
• Use 1” margins for the page.
• Divide your information in the resume into clear sections.
• Typically used fonts are Times New Roman or Calibri. The font size for the body should be set to 11 or 12 points. Heading for each section should be with font size of 13 to 14 points to make your resume easy to read. 
• Limit all your content to 1 page (provide only most relevant essentials)
• Left align the list of skills and abilities you have that matches the job requirement.

As a fresher, what you should include in resume:  

• Contact information in the Headers. 
• Write your objective below the header.
• In the experience section of the resume include projects, internships, volunteering activities, leadership role played in organizing an event at your college etc.
• List all your skills and abilities that makes you stand out from other applicants.

Importance of your email ID in resume for success:

• Email ID should be professional. Some examples of unprofessional email address, smartsuraj@gmail.com, manuxxx@gmail.com [1].
• You are grown up, no more unprofessional email address.
• Add your LinkedIn address in the header. If you have programming skills you may include your GitHub profile as well.

Tip 3:  Elements of resume 

You may have come across hundreds of books and articles on resume writing. There are large number of services, who design and write your resume for a fee. But, I believe the best resume is the one which you design and write yourself. I suggest, think of your resume as an advertisement about yourself.

Typically, the resume will have the following elements:

Header – What should be there?

Include your name, mobile number, email at the top left corner of the page. Here, your name must be the most prominent item, followed by phone number and email address. Now a days, employers will contact you through mail or phone, so it is no longer necessary to include address in the header.

Objective – Career statements

It is a phrase or sentence which shows your career goals and shows why you are applying for the job. The statement should include the job title you are applying for, 3 to 4 your key skills which suits the job profile and also state what you are hoping to achieve in the job. Try to keep 3 to 4 sentences long.  

Summary of qualifications – What should be there?

Here you must write on your most notable attributes. You may include, years of experience (if a fresher, you may include your experience as an intern), technology expertise, languages (Indian, foreign, if any?), achievements. In this block, you may also include keywords. You must provide evidence with supporting documents.

Education

In this part of the resume, you must list the highest level of education first. Include name of the degree, college, GPA and any other academic honours, if any.

Experiences

Here you include your internships, part time jobs, volunteer work, member in special projects (if any?). Include only those experiences, that relate your seeking job.

Other possible elements to include:

References (if requested by employer), professional memberships, publications and presentation, social responsibility activities, technology skills, leadership skills.

TIPS TO BUILD RESUME - RESUME KEYWORDS

Tip 2:  Resume Keywords – What?

Keywords play a crucial role in getting noticed by your potential employer. By using appropriate keywords in your resume and covering letter, your chances of getting interview call is high.

 Keywords  – they describe the skills you possess that meet the requirement of the job.

They define your skills, abilities, credentials, accomplishments, expertise, proficiency, qualification that a hiring company looks for in a candidate.

When the company receives pile of resume, the first step they follow to filter is look  for  the keywords that match their job requirement.

      In fact, Many companies use talent management system to screen potential candidates for   the job openings [1]. These talent management systems eliminate the resumes that are   missing certain keyword.

The keywords included should be job specific and highly relevant.

For example, if you are applying for a radio jockey position, the most appropriate keywords would include:

1. Sense of humour

2. General knowledge

3. Command over language

If you are applying for a data scientist position, keywords could include: 

• Hypothesis testing
• Statistics
• Design of experiments
• Tableau (or any other software package)
• Data visualization

Resume Keywords – How?

Review on search engines for the job openings that are similar to your area of interest and look for the keywords to include in your resume. Normally, the keywords would be picked from “REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATION”, “ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES” section of the job profile.

Also review the company website for the keywords. You might see them on the “About Us” tab of company's website. For example, if company defines itself as creative, innovative, you might include “Creative”, “Creativity”, ”Innovative” in your resume.
